A New Chapter. A Bigger Spotlight on West Virginia.
An exciting new chapter is coming to Mountaineer Media—with the same love for West Virginia and a fresh vision for sharing its stories.
A business announcement can tell you what is being built. The fuller story tells you who is building it, why they chose West Virginia and what it could mean for the people who call this place home.
That is the kind of storytelling we believe in.
Mountaineer Media was built around a simple idea: the West Virginia experience is worth sharing. Through conversations, features and community connections, this platform has celebrated the people whose ambition, creativity and commitment give the Mountain State its character.
That purpose is not changing. But something new is taking shape.
And a look around West Virginia offers plenty of reasons to be excited about the stories ahead.
Opportunity Has a Local Story
In North Central West Virginia, a planned $23 million aviation training facility at the region’s airport recently received final approval. The project is expected to expand Pierpont Community and Technical College’s aviation program capacity from 130 to 230 students, creating more room to prepare people for careers in aircraft maintenance. Behind the construction plans is a story worth following: how training can connect West Virginians with opportunities close to home.
In the Eastern Panhandle, a planned $13 million expansion by life sciences company Randox was highlighted at September’s West Virginia Business Summit. State officials expect the Jefferson County project to add 100 jobs. It is another opportunity to explore the connection between business investment, specialized skills and the people who will do the work.
Energy also took center stage at the West Virginia Business Summit, with discussions spanning natural gas, power generation, transmission infrastructure and the growing demands of technology-driven industries. Together, those conversations highlighted the potential to connect West Virginia’s energy strengths with new investment and economic opportunity. But the story goes beyond pipelines and power lines. It is about the skilled workers, local businesses and communities that could help build—and benefit from—what comes next. Those are the connections we want to explore.
Homegrown businesses deserve the same attention. An August update on West Virginia University’s Vantage Ventures reported that startups participating in its accelerator had collectively raised more than $6 million and created or retained more than 70 jobs across the state. Among those businesses is Best Dam Tape, which has secured contracts with Walmart and Dunham’s Sports. These are stories about founders testing ideas, finding customers and learning how to grow.
Meanwhile, the Governor’s Conference on Tourism will bring industry leaders to Charleston September 20–23 to explore the connections among tourism, arts, history and community development. That conversation is a reminder of how broadly we should think about business in West Virginia—and why the people behind our destinations, local shops and visitor experiences belong in it.
For us, these developments raise the questions that make business coverage meaningful. Who sees an opportunity? What does it take to pursue it? What stands in the way? And how can success reach beyond one company to benefit a community?
These are questions and answers we want to explore.
Business News, With People at the Center
Our interest in West Virginia business, economic development and the people who lead these efforts extends beyond investment totals and ribbon-cuttings.
We want to meet the entrepreneur preparing to hire a first employee. The family carrying a business into its next generation. The student discovering a career they did not know existed. The community working to bring an empty building back to life.
We want to understand what established industries are doing next—and hear from the people trying something entirely new.
Our approach will be positive, curious and grounded. Celebrating opportunity should mean looking closely at the work behind it, acknowledging the challenges and explaining what progress could actually mean for the people who live here.
A promising announcement is a beginning. We want to tell the story that follows.
A New Era. The Same West Virginia Heart.
That vision is guiding the next chapter of Mountaineer Media.
We are preparing to relaunch the platform with fresh energy and a renewed focus on West Virginia’s people, businesses and possibilities. Our ambition is to bring timely news, useful context and personal storytelling together in a way that feels engaging, distinctly local and worth returning to.
The next era will build on what made Mountaineer Media meaningful in the first place, while opening the door to new voices, fresh perspectives and innovative ways to share the West Virginia experience.
We are not revealing everything just yet. There is more to share about the people, plans and ideas behind what comes next.
For now, consider this your first look at a new beginning.
Keep an eye on Mountaineer Media. An announcement is coming—and we hope you will be part of the story.
West Virginia Is moving forward. We’re here to continue telling the story.
